Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
