Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
