Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
