Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
